Moviemagic is a small, simple site which lacks even the basic functionality of most other Indian DVD rental sites. For instance, they are the only DVD rental site we've seen worldwide that does not list any genres to browse. Likewise, they have the simplest of search engines, just a single query, which doesn't even yield "clickable" results--in fact, we're not sure how you add films to your queue, which they call a Wish List.
The FAQ suggests you email them a list of up to 25 titles in numbered order which you'd like to see, there is no automated control of the queue at all--all done manually via email.
Based on these problems alone we'd write Moviemagic off, but there is one fact which sets them apart and makes it worth a second look for some--it is the only site we've seen that uses the postal system vice couriers. Although based in Delhi, they will post anywhere in the country, which may make it an option for rural customers, though you will be at the mercy of the postal system. If a disc is lost, Moviemagic's FAQ claims they will simply send a replacement disc by post once informed by email. Unlike many of the courier-based services which are open later, Moviemagic is only open 9-5.
Moviemagic was established in 2006, fully Delhi-owned, Moviemagic is a service "for film fans by film fans." They claim they have the latest releases the same day as the high street and have the "biggest back catalogue in India"--but elsewhere they note they have over 1,800 films--about a tenth of what market leader Seventymm stocks. Indeed, there are practically no references to the site on the net or blogosphere, so we'd steer clear.
Prices: Moviemagic has two unlimited subscription plans: 2 discs out at a time for RS 690 per month (refundable security deposit of Rs 1000), and 4 discs for RS 990 per month (security Rs 2000). They also have two capped monthly plans, 4 discs total for Rs 190, averaging Rs 48 per disc (security Rs 500), and 10 discs total for Rs 390, averaging a very reasonable Rs 39 per disc (security Rs 500).
Canceling a subscription is not as easy as with most services, as you must cancel a full 7 days before your next billing date.
