Friday Box Office went out of business as of mid 2007; their review is left here unchanged for posterity.
Friday Box Office is a smaller, new entry in Bangalore with the simplest web design we've come across--we'd stick with the bigger and more established names.
We hate to be brutally honest here, but this site has one of the simplest site designs around--good for circa 1997, but not now. It even has a line of Google advertisements at the top, and claims the site is hosted for free--unfortunately, the lack of money spent on the site shows. We'd prefer to go with a more well-funded and professional service.
I mean, hit the FAQ button and you get an error message saying " Our server has behaved in an unexpected manner. Please click on refresh or hit the BACK button of the browser"--which doesn't help by the way. Likewise, for their reccomended films, it simply says Coming Soon. They also have some odd restrictions we've never seen on other sites, such as " You must send us 50 movie wish list every month in order to give you the service every month." Likewise, members must be 21 years or older (unlike the 18 typical of most other sites).
They only have seven genres (and one of those is "Hindi"--suggesting an overwhelming focus on English films), this is among the fewest of any Indian DVD rental site. Their film data is truly the most sparse we have seen of any DVD rental site the world over--only a small mouseover box listing stars, director, and genre--that's it, no synopsis, no year, running time, rating, format, etc.
Their terms and conditions state that deliveries of DVDs are made within 24 hours if no unforseen circumstances arise. As with all Indian DVD rental companies, they do not work Sundays ro public holidays.
We haven't seen any substantial mention of Friday Box Office rentals on the web or blogosphere, so can't really judge their service, but if the site design is anything to go by, we'd be worried.
Prices: Friday Box Office an unlimited subscription plans 1 disc out at a time for RS 400 per month (plus a steep Rs 1000 membership fee and a refundable Rs 500 security deposit). They also have a capped plan of 2 discs per month for RS 100 (averaging to Rs 50 per disc), but this is also subject to the same, steep Rs 1000 membership fee and Rs 500 security deposit. We simply wouldn't be willing to pay such steep fees for such a basic site.
If you cancel, you must return the discs within 7 days.
